The Goddess & The Moon
Flavours of Celtic nomads, prehistoric plaids, Lost Tribe explores the finding and bringing to light that which has been lost; lost stories, lost traditions, lost civilisations, lost textiles and the retelling of history.
Bold colours, plaids, felted socks, needle binded hats were a feature of the Lost Tribes of Tarim Basin in modern day china. These Celtic giants stood well over six foot (included the women) were nomads and used simple tolls to make textiles. How did these textiles survive 4000 years? The salt mines that took them from Central Europe east to the Tarim Basin.
Although their language did not survive, we know that storytelling has gone hand in hand with the making of textiles. The stories or folk tales would have been used to pass on life lessons. Can we flesh out the stories that these prehistoric people would have told? Did they worship gods? These tribes had a tradition of oral storytelling.
A few thousand years before knitting was invented, they constructed beret shaped hats using a technique called Nalbinding (needle binding). We know this because recently 4000 year old mummies where found buried in salt mines, along with their extensive collection of textiles. Including vivid coloured plaids.
Each piece in the Lost Tribe collection pays homage to the Celtic nomads, their prehistoric textiles and in particular plaid. Bold solid colours mix with plaids and stripes, knitted to give a contemporary look.
Also referencing the ancient Celtic practice of living by the moon cycle and the triple goddess maiden mother crone and their complimentary energy.
Much of the lost practices and language of the ancient celts may be the intent of the ancient Roman’s who were threatened by the worshipping of a mother goddess and the power it gave women at the time.
Lost tribe brings together lost place of women in society, lost stories that were pieces together somewhat clumsily by brothers grim, lost textiles, lost language. But also the fleshing out of bones that have been found, in pieces.
Captivated by ancient Celtic culture, folklore, textiles, religion, language, art, life.
